Membership Bodies: are you getting VAT right?

Following the recent publication of proposals to apply zero rating to e-publications in the future, it is a good time to remind bodies currently applying the Extra Statutory Concession (ESC) to their membership fees of the VAT rules and the recent HMRC challenges.

This seminar will help Non Profit membership bodies such as Royal Colleges, professional bodies and chartered societies to understand the benefits and pitfalls when accounting for VAT on membership and other related income.

We will cover:

  • what the benefits on offer are
  • what qualifies for zero rating or exemption, and whether there are any standard rated elements
  • what HMRC have been looking at over the past 12 months, especially:
    • electronic publications
    • members’ only websites
    • member discounts
    • non-business offerings allowing anyone access to your website

This seminar looks at the ways HMRC are focusing on these splits and the way they are attempting to cost them, which can often be different from those of the tax payer. We will also consider whether it is of benefit to actually apply the ESC as we move into a digitalised age.

This seminar is free of charge.
